Is anyone else dreading the end of summer? Even though the past week or so has been smokey in this part of Canada from all of the fires, I’m still enjoying the perks of the warmer weather. Eating out of the garden. Swimming in the lake. Watermelon. And best of all, no jackets or shoes required.

How about you? Do you love summer? Or are you looking forward to the fall?
I used to love fall, but now I’m wiser and realize that fall always leads into winter.
Now for the purpose of this post! Let’s see what i can come up with for frugal things I’ve been up to this past week of summer. Sweet, sweet, summer.
1. We ate from our garden.
This year hasn’t been the best for parts of our garden. Sadly our beans seem to be more sparse, tough and stringy than usual and our cherry tomatoes are looking pretty sad. Not to mention my 2 year old daughter Estherlyn keeps picking yellow tomatoes. Usually in August we are swimming in tomatoes, but this year I’m not sure we’ve even had one ripe tomato off of our vines.
That being said, our greens (spinach and Swiss chard) have been doing well and the zucchini are in full force. Despite my previous complaints, I am thankful for out garden (and even more thankful for Mr LF’s work tending it).
This week we have been enjoying our greens served in our eggs as well as chopped in spaghetti sauce and mixed in salads. Zucchinis have simply been steamed and eaten most dinners. They’re a family favourite.
2. Mr LF and I enjoyed a dinner-theatre date night for free!
My husband’s company had two tickets to a local heritage dinner theatre which they offered to us for free!
I would have never spent money to go, but it was so fun to do something different for a date night.
The food wasn’t anything special, but I didn’t have to cook or clean up after and that, my friend, is priceless.
The theatre portion of the evening was so fun and really well done. The cast sang beautifully and some parts were so funny my face hurt.
3. We keep the house warmer in the summer.
To save on the cost of air conditioning, we set our thermostat to 24 or 25C (76F) in the summertime. I feel like this temperature gives us some relief from the heat, but also helps our bodies to be more acclimatized.
There are times we set it down a degree or two, because sometimes you got to treat yo’ self.
4. We were given a set of compasses and whistles.
While we were at a garage sale in our neighbourhood, the homeowner asked if we would like a set of compasses and whistles. IT turns out that she used to teach outdoor navigation courses and thought our family looked like one that would be the “type” to use them.
I took that as a compliment and asked her how much she wanted them. I was told that she wanted to give them to us.
I was so blessed by her generosity and pleased to have some tools for some outdoor hiking and geocaching this fall (and years to come). They’ll also come in handy if I want to teach some navigation to our homeschool co-op!!
5. Mr LF changed the oil in our van.
One thing I never knew I wanted in a husband was a handy-man, and I’m so glad God thought to give me a husband who is well beyond a “Jack-of-all-trades”.
Mr LF naturally takes care of all the vehicle maintenance around here. It’s not because he’s a man, but because he’s happy to do it and I’m happy to let him.
I’m sure that I could learn how to change the oil on our vehicles (and probably should), but for now I’ll leave that for another day.
Mr LF also bought the oil on sale for half price which made this oil change even more frugal!
